Rich and incredibly smooth, with perfumed aromas of sweet vanilla oak and a lovely rich palate with a well rounded finish. Small scale production allows real attention to detail. Wheat used is top quality and water comes from their own spring. The wheat is rolled rather than hammered as it is kinder to the grain, before being gently cooked.
Distilled in an old copper doubler still the spirit is run off at relatively low proof maintaining its body. 8 years ageing in charred oak barrels adds sweet vanilla notes. Use of red winter wheat instead of rye produces a noticeably sweeter, less bitter, less harsh whisky. Matured in seasoned American oak barrels that are charred on the inside before being matured for three Kentucky summers. We use only charred white oak barrels to hold our whisky as it ages. Now, we may lose a bit of whisky due to evaporation and absorption during this process, but, rest assured, it's worth it. Due to the charring of the oak, the natural sugars of the wood are released into the bourbon, enhancing the already wonderfully mellow taste of Maker's Mark. Knob Creek is considerably bolder than Maker's Mark, in part, because it is bottled at a stronger 50 percent alcohol by volume . The barrels Knob Creek is aged in also have a deeper char, which imparts a darker oak flavor. At 45 percent ABV , Maker's Mark does have a kick, though this bourbon is sweeter. Five years later, the distillery released the first bottles of Maker's Mark Bourbon Whisky, which featured the distillery's distinctive red wax seal. Kentucky distiller Bill Samuels, Sr., founder of Maker's Mark, set out to make a better-tasting bourbon whisky. He discovered that if you use winter wheat in the mash instead of the traditional distiller's rye, your bourbon whisky is smoother and less bitter – and that made the difference. Maker's Mark Bourbon Whisky is produced, aged, and bottled at the Loretto, Kentucky distillery.
They even print the old-fashioned labels and hand-dip each bottle in red wax on-site. It is one of the most picturesque industrial sites you will find, which is why it's a popular stop for travelers. This iconic American whiskey has a sweet flavor profile.
It is fantastic neat and on the rocks, and Maker's Mark can create impressive whiskey cocktails. Whether you're a long-time fan or anticipating your very first taste, it is a bourbon that will not disappoint. I'm not very good at distinguishing the flavours, but I have to admit on this one that there's a distinct plastic nose. Maybe because the ladies around the tank managed to get that flavour in as they were sealing the bottle. My usual problem, the whiskey's just washed out any taste, and I unfortunately ended up with burn of alcohol.
After about 5 minutes I had some taste, but I had already reached for the 99% cocoa chocolate by that time. At the second taste with a very small vol sip, I again got disappointed. The first UK special edition bottle was produced in 1993. In celebration of the 1996 NCAA Men's Basketball Champions, Maker's Mark printed a bottle that had a denim background with white type.
